Rupes Recta (Straight Fault) Region

Description:

The following image shows the famous "Straight Wall" (Rupes Recta) that is the most notable known fault on the Moon. According to Antonin Rukl's "Atlas of the Moon", the length of the fault is around 110 km , its height is 240-300 m, and its apparent width 2.5 km. It casts a striking shadow when illuminated by the rising sun at first quarter. Passing the mouse over the image shows names of prominent lunar features in this area.

Montes Apenninus (Apennines) Region

Description:

The following image shows the Moon's greatest mountain range. Named for the Apennine mountains in Italy, this range attains a height of 5000 m above the level of the adjacent maria and forms the southeastern border of Mare Imbrium. Passing the mouse over the image shows names of prominent lunar features in this area.

Montes Alpes (Alps) Region

Description:

The following image covers the Moon's Montes Alpes mountain range and adjacent areas. Vallis Alpes (to the immediate right of the mountain range) is one of the best known lunar valleys. Also shown is the prominent crater Plato (above and left of the Alps), crater Aristoteles (far right of the Alps), and crater Eudoxus (below Aristoteles).
