NGC 7293 The Helix Nebula (LRGB)

The Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) is a prominent planetary nebula located in the constellation Aquarius. At a distance of approximately 650 light years and a width of about 2.5 light years, it is one of the closest planetary nebulas to our sun. When a star much like our sun reaches the end of its life, the outer gas layers are expelled into space. The central star (which eventually becomes a white dwarf star) glows with so much energy that it causes the expelled gases to fluoresce. Click on the links below to read Rob Gendler's excellent description of the Helix Nebula and to view some of the Helix Nebula images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope.
