The Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) is a prominent planetary nebula located in the constellation Aquarius. At a distance of approximately 650 light years and a width of about 2.5 light years, it is one of the closest planetary nebulas to our sun. When a star much like our sun reaches the end of its life, the outer gas layers are expelled into space. The central star (which eventually becomes a white dwarf star) glows with so much energy that it causes the expelled gases to fluoresce.
